LISTEN

I’ve always felt drawn to California—to the sounds of Laurel Canyon”. Helplessly Hoping embodies those sounds for me…and singing it with The Gibson Brothers’ stellar voices transported me there, to a place where Joni Mitchell or Bonnie Raitt might sing with David Crosby and Graham Nash. I hope it does that for the listener too.

Watching Del sing this in the studio made me actually feel the reelin' and rockin' of the jail. He made this old spiritual come to life--and pushed me to do the same--making for a truly joyous and uplifting experience!

Being from Sweden, I swear part of our religion is ABBA. :-) I was listening through their catalog, and this song struck me in a new way because I now know the back story. While they were on stage singing this in front of thousands of people, both couples in ABBA were going through divorces. It became very haunting for me. If you'll listen to the lyrics with that in mind--it will change the way you see this song.

I wish I had written this song…I almost feel like I did because it speaks to me so deeply. I had a song with a similar message but it didn’t make the cut because I heard this one and fell in love. What we're all searching for is purpose in life. It’s very easy to lose yours in someone else’s dream…a mom living life through her kids…a wife pouring herself into her husband… a girlfriend giving up her dreams, afraid she'll lose her man. Find yourself, be you, and then find the “ship” that's going in the same direction and is worthy of you.

I’m struck by how easily some people can leave “true love” behind… one day they are planning a life together and the next day they’ve fallen out of love. How can that be? "How Can It Be" topped Sweden's indie charts at #1!
